Santa Lastenia Cemetery

HISTORY · of · the · RANCEL · FAMILY · VAULT
At mid-19th century, Victoriano RANCEL y PINTADO built a family vault in San Rafael y San Roque Cemetery, at the time the only one of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The family vault was nonetheless 'inaugurated' by Victoriano's first cousin, Rafael RANCEL VALENCIANO, born in the Canarian island of Lanzarote -where our RANCEL family was established in the 18th century. Rafael died in Santa Cruz in 1870 and his cousin provided his burial in his own family vault. The marble gravestone which covered the vault had -and its remains still have- the inscription "Here rests Don Rafael Rancel y Valenciano. He died on 31 October 1871", as he was the first Rancel who was buried there.
The San Rafael y San Roque Cemetery had been inaugurated in 1811. Before that date, all burials were done -as it was customary all over Europe- in the churches, and concretely in La Concepcion Church. The yellow fever plague of 1810 and 1811 caused such a heavy mortality, that it was impossible to find free space at La Concepcion. Even Nuestra Señora de la Regla church, which was arranged as cemetery, was soon too little for this purpose. It was then when the City Cemetery was built, in an area -then unoccupied- south of the town.
Different family members were buried in the RANCEL family vault until year 1937.
But long before that, the San Rafael y San Roque Cemetery was too little for the City needs. The city growth caused it to be surrounded by buildings and houses. Therefore, the new Santa Lastenia Cemetery -still in use- was inaugurated in 1916. In time, burials in San Rafael y San Roque were forbidden but for the ones done in already existing family vaults and crypts.
In the 1950s the old cemetery was completely surrounded by buildings and in a state of abandon. It was then when Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ, grandson of Victoriano RANCEL y PINTADO, bought the place and ordered the building of a new RANCEL family vault in Santa Lastenia Cemetery, after asking all his brothers and sisters for a written authorisation to remove their relatives' remains.
On 17 March 1960, a Sunday, the remains of the RANCELs which rested in the old family vault were taken to the new one. Fernando José Marino RANCEL and his daughter-in-law Margarita VILLAMANDOS CABRERA-PINTO (his son Julio RANCEL MARTÍN's wife) were the only family members brave enough to attend at the old vault's opening.
HOW · is · the · RANCEL · FAMILY · VAULT ?
| The RANCEL Family vault is one of the many existing family crypts in any Spanish -or European in general- cemetery, and specially in the countries of Latin tradition. But for visitors from anglo-saxon cultural tradition -and some actual RANCEL branches, of American citizenship, are already within this cultural area-, it would be convenient to explain our burial system. |

As it happens to most people in our country, the body of a dead person is buried in its coffin and stays there for several years, in this case in a section of the family vault. After some time -usually five years- the remains are taken and put in a small box, which is placed in departments called "columbarios" (pigeon's holes). This is the case even for the members of the Spanish Royal Family, which following a centuries-old tradition, are first placed in a room called 'Pudridero' (literally, 'Rotting place'), and after several years the remains are taken to their definitive resting place in the marble sarcophages at the Royal Pantheon of El Escorial (Madrid). This explains how is it possible that until now, the remains of 22 family members have found their resting place in our RANCEL family vault, which doesn't look so big. Naturally, the vault is bigger than it looks from outside, because it goes underground on several levels. The vault is reached through opening the big central marble gravestone. |

WHO · REST · in · the · RANCEL · FAMILY · VAULT ?
22 members of the family, from five different generations, rest in the Family vault at Santa Lastenia cemetery. At least, there is documental proof for these relatives, but it is possible that other family members could also be among the oldest remains from the ancient family vault at San Rafael y San Roque. Anyway, this has been impossible to proof. Those whose remains are documented through burial acts are the following (mentioned by generation, and within each generation, by burial date):
1st Generation.-
- 1870: Rafael RANCEL y VALENCIANO: first cousin of the Family Vault founder, Victoriano RANCEL y PINTADO. He was born in Teguise (Island of Lanzarote) on 23 October 1815, he died in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 31 October 1870 (55 years old).
- 1901: Saturnina María MARRERO LUIS de la GUARDIA: the founder's wife. Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 29 November 1821, she died in the same city on 8 August 1901 (79 years old).
- 1905: Victoriano Antonio RANCEL y PINTADO: founder of the Family Vault. He was born in Saragossa (Spain), where his father was appointed as an Officer of the Royal Engineers, on 10 January 1827; he died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 3 July 1905 (78 years old).
- 1926: Maximina SUÁREZ PALMA: mother-in-law of Fernando RANCEL MARRERO, a founder's son. She was born in 1840 in Tacoronte (Tenerife), she died on 12 August 1926 in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife (86 years old).
2nd Generation.-
- 1885: Valentina Francisca Saturnina RANCEL MARRERO: a founder's daughter. She was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 15 August 1856, she died in the same place in 1885 (29 years old).
- 1889: Julia RANCEL MARRERO: a founder's daughter. She was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1858, she died in the same place in 1889 (31 years old).
- 1927: Carmen Jerónima Dolores ÁLVAREZ SUÁREZ (Mamacarmen): the founder's daughter-in-law, married to Fernando RANCEL MARRERO, and daughter of Maximina SUÁREZ PALMA. She was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 30 September 1861, she died in the same city on 1 June 1927 (65 years old). As there was no place in the old Rancel Vault when she died, she was buried first in another tomb and only later her remains were placed in the family vault.
- 1932: Fernando Félix Rufino RANCEL MARRERO (Papafernando): the founder's son, husband of the latter. He was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 29 July 1852, he died in the same city on 27 January 1932 (79 years old).
3rd Generation.-
- 1916: Purificación RANCEL ÁLVAREZ (Pura): a founder's granddaughter and child of the two above-mentioned. She was born in Maspalomas Lighthouse (Gran Canaria) in 1892, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 22 April 1916 (24 years old).
- 1968: Dolores Concepción MARTÍN REYES (Molola): wife of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ, a founder's grandson. She was the first one to be buried at her death in the new Rancel family vault at Santa Lastenia, built by her husband. She was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 16 November 1881, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 29 December 1968 (87 years old).
- 1969: Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ (Papamarino): a founder's grandson, husband of the latter and builder of the new family vault. He was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 1 July 1884, he died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 15 October 1969 (85 years old).
- 1969: Antonia Eduvigis QUESADA MARTÍN (Tonda): a first cousin once removed of Dolores MARTÍN REYES, she lived with Marino and Dolores since the early 1920s. She was born in Caracas (Venezuela) on 6 February 1898, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife in November 1969 (71 years old).
4th Generation.-
- 1914: Africana RANCEL MARTÍN (Africanita): a founder's great-granddaughter and child of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ and Dolores MARTÍN REYES. She was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife in 1913, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 10 September 1914 (1 year old).
- 1917: Zeneida RANCEL MARTÍN: a founder's great-granddaughter and sister of the latter. She was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 16 November 1915, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 28 October 1917 (almost 2 years old).
- 1937: Alberta NÚÑEZ RANCEL (Albertita): a founder's great-granddaughter, child of Gaspar NÚÑEZ and of Carmen RANCEL ÁLVAREZ, and niece of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ. She died as a baby.
- 1940: Francisco RANCEL MARTÍN (Paco): a founder's great-grandson, child of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ and Dolores MARTÍN REYES. He was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 27 September 1910, he died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 27 May 1940 (29 years old).
- 1979: Victoriano RANCEL MARTÍN (Manano): a founder's great-grandson, brother of the latter. He was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 2 January 1906, he died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 19 August 1979 (73 years old).
- 1989: Marino RANCEL MARTÍN: a founder's great-grandson, brother of the latter. He was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 10 May 1908, he died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 12 September 1989 (81 years old).
- 1996: Albina RANCEL MARTÍN (Alba): a founder's great-granddaughter, sister of the latter. She was born in Hoya Grande (Adeje, Tenerife) on 2 September 1909, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 15 February 1996 (86 years old).
- 1996: Rosa MORA MORA: widow of Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ, a founder's great-grandson. She was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 23 December 1996.
- 2001: Eusebia SANTIAGO SILVERA (Eu): widow of Francisco RANCEL MARTÍN, a founder's great-grandson. She was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 20 February 1913, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 30 January 2001 (87 years old).
5th Generation.-
- 1972: Isabel Margarita RANCEL VILLAMANDOS (Isamar): a founder's second-great-granddaughter and child of Julio RANCEL MARTÍN and Margarita VILLAMANDOS CABRERA-PINTO. She was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 25 September 1962, she died in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife on 19 March 1972 (9 years old).
Some close relatives of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ, although passed away, are not in the RANCEL family vault. Those are:
- Higinio MARÍN PATAU: husband of Zenobia RANCEL MARTÍN, a daughter of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ and Dolores MARTÍN REYES. He was born on 7 October 1900 in Iquique (Chile), he died in July 1971 in Barcelona (Spain). Buried in Barcelona.
- Nivario RANCEL MARTÍN (Vallo): son of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ and Dolores MARTÍN REYES. He was born on 4 December 1923 in Güines (Cuba), he died on 2 November 1971 in Maracaibo (Venezuela). Buried in Caracas (Venezuela), where he lived with his wife and children.
- Zenobia RANCEL MARTÍN (Suse): daughter of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ and Dolores MARTÍN REYES. She was born on 16 November 1915 in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife, she died on 12 April 1997 in Barcelona (Spain). Cremation in Barcelona, her ashes were scattered in the sea at Begur (Costa Brava, Girona, Spain).
- Beatrix SERAL ARANDA (Bice): wife of Julio Néstor RANCEL VILLAMANDOS, a gradson of José Fernando Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ. She was born on 6 February 1953 in Paris (France), she died on 7 July 1997 in Lanjarón (Granada, Spain). Her body was cremated in Madrid and her ashes were scattered -according to her wish- in the Sierra de Peguerinos (Ávila, Spain).

- Julio RANCEL MARTÍN: son of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ and Dolores MARTÍN REYES, and father-in-law of the latter. He was born on 29 March 1922 in Güines (Cuba), he died on 30 November 1998 in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife. Cremation in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife, his ashes were scattered -following his wish- in this spot of Ucanca Valley, near Teide volcano (Tenerife). |
- Concepción MARRERO AMARAL: widow of Victoriano RANCEL MARTÍN, a son of Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ. She was born in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife in 1914, she died on 30 November 2000 in Sta.Cruz de Tenerife. She was cremated and her ashes placed in her parents' grave.

| Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ and Dolores MARTÍN REYES were parents of twins, two girls born on 16 November 1915, called Zenobia and Zeneida. When the baby girls were almost two years old, October 1917, both felt sick with whooping cough, a children sickness which at the time was a very dangerous one. The entire household was shaken, specially because only three years before they had lost another girl, Africana RANCEL MARTÍN, after a fulminant meningitis. The family state of mind went even worst when the girls' grandfather, Francisco Tomás MARTÍN RODRÍGUEZ, Dolores' father, 78 years old, died. |
Zenobia and Zeneida, Zeneida and Zenobia... |
One of the twins died on 28 October. This was a very difficult moment for everybody and specially for the mother, Dolores (Lola), who just had lost her father. In adition, one of the girls died, but the other one was seriously ill and at any moment she could follow the same fate as her sister. In such state of mind originated the family controversy, still unresolved (?), about... who died... Dolores assured that it was little Zeneida who died and that Zenobia was the survivor. But part of the family assured, swore and proclamed that the dead one was Zenobia and that Zeneida had survived. Dolores answered that a mother knows her children and that she knew perfectly well who had die and who didn't, while the partisans of Zeneida's survival replied that Dolores was so tired and depressed, that she couldn't know who was who...
The little dead, following her mother's indications, was registered as Zeneida. Officially, Zeneida was buried in the family vault at the old cemetery. In 1960, 43 years later, her remains were removed and taken, together with the remains of other family members, to the family vault of the new cemetery. Her twin sister Zenobia, who survived illness, grew up and enjoyed her life. She went with her parents to Cuba and there she lived the happy times that made from the Caribbean island, in our family memories, the "Rancel Paradise". "When we Rancel die, we don't go to Heaven, we go to Cuba..." To this mythical, wonderful Cuba they experienced from 1918 to 1931. Zenobia, called Suse, returned in 1931 with her parents, brothers and sister to the Canary Islands. Eventually she happilly married Higinio MARIN, a widower with children, businessman and factory owner from Catalonia. She moved to Barcelona. There she had step-children, children and grandchildren, a long life and although she had -like always in life- to pass through a little bit of everything, she was doubtless very happy. She was a person full of such a joy of living and love for other people, that not only her children -and stepchildren-, her grandchildren and step-grandchildren, but also her nephews, nieces, sisters- and brothers-in-law, and everybody who once met her, cherish unforgettable and wonderful memories of Suse.
During all these years, a family gathering used to be spiced by the debate among the oldest ones on Zenobita-Zeneidita (little Zenobia-little Zeneida...) At a certain moment, somebody would say '...why, you all know it, the one who is alive is really Zeneida, not Zenobia...', which immediately provoked the annoyance and even the anger of Grandma Molola, who indignant ordered everybody to stop saying nonsenses with her usual 'I know very well that the one who died was Zeneidita!...A mother knows very well who's the one of her girls who die...!'. Discussion should be finished at this point, but you could usually hear, like an underground thunder, the ticklish comment of grandaunt Trina (Trinidad RANCEL ÁLVAREZ), who with all her Rancel stubborness looking through her blue eyes, said '...but say what you want, the one who's alive is Zeneidita and the one who died was Zenobita...'. The question was finally a sort of family joke, a very typical joke of the Rancel folklore, famous for being so frequently mad, comedy-like and surrealist.
The story finished... almost like it started. In April 1997, Zenobia was going to become a great-grandmother. Her granddaughter Marta Isamar de LUQUE MARÍN was pregnant, close to giving birth, and she knew that she was expecting a girl. She decided to call her ZENEIDA, like her grandmother's twin who had die 79 years before. Zenobia was full of joy and she helped to prepare the layette and baby equipment for her great-granddaughter and namesake of her twin. Suddenly she got a heart infarct and was hospitalized, and after a short period she died on 12 April 1997, when she was 81 years old. According to her wishes, she was cremated and her children decided to scatter her ashes in the sea at Begur, a lovely place in the Costa Brava. Her great-granddaughter Zeneida ALBADALEJO de LUQUE was born on the following 8 May, not even a month after Zenobia left us...
For all who know the many stories, incredible but real, about the coincidences, premonitions, divinations and other witchcraft experiences of the RANCEL, it was at least necessary to think again about the old family question on Zenobia and Zeneida... Was it, after all, Zeneidita who survived, the one who had to go now and make place for the new Zeneida that was given to us, three generations after the old one...? Or do Zenobias and Zeneidas have to alternate among the Rancel family, and never stay at the same time in this lower world...?
At this time, Zenobia, Zeneida, Molola, grandaunt Trina and many other family members must know the answer to these questions, and they will not have to discuss further, in the Cuban Paradise of the Rancel, about who is buried in the Family Vault...

- ABOUT · HOW · 'PAPAMARINO' · COULD · FINISH · the · BUILDING · of · the · NEW · FAMILY · VAULT
As it was already said, in the 1950s Santa Cruz' old cemetery, San Rafael y San Roque, was in a pittyful state of abandon. Many graves and vaults were the object of acts of vandalism and destruction and the local authorities didn't seem very much concerned about trying to stop this crime against Tenerife's historical heritage.
Fernando José Marino RANCEL ÁLVAREZ, knowing that his parents and grandparents, but also one of his sisters and two of his children rested in the old Rancel family vault, couldn't bear this state of things and on the ocasion of a new cemetery enlargement, he decided to buy a concession in Santa Cruz' Santa Lastenia, to have a new family vault built there.
He put in the project a good amount of his savings and efforts, he charged an architect with the task of designing a building plan, obtained the necessary building permits and had the works started. But as it usually arrives in such things, when the building was on the way, the costs were surpassed and the budget became higher than foreseen.
Marino RANCEL, a man of many interests and endowed with a great intelectual curiosity, had many hobbies. One of them which had nothing to do with culture or science was... lottery. He enjoyed himself like a child playing on the State lottery, on the Blind-organization-charity lottery and on all raffles which he found on his way. His hobbie was well known and proverbial in the family, as well as the fact that he never got any kind of price or win. Lola, his wife, grumbled and claimed against puting so much time and pocket-money "...in those nonsenses, without obtaining any kind of win at all...". Marino also invested in 'water-shares', classic financial investments in the Canaries where, to obtain and exploit water from underground sources (the so-called "Islands' white gold"), societies and companies are formed and its shares are negotiated in the Water Stock Exchange. At this time he owned shares, but he found himself so short of cash to finish the family vault building, that he thought he had to sell his financial investments and dedicate everything to finish the project.
Really worried, he asked for help to all Saints and all heavenly powers: he needed money to finish the family vault, to have a worthy resting place for the older Rancel generations and a place where members of the new generations could also rest in the future together with them...
And like in a fairy tale... he won a big price in the lottery! A good amount of money... which PRECISELY reached to pay, practically to the last cent, the finishing of the building.
Amazed? If you are a member of the RANCEL family, you should know by now how we are and that this is our 'daily bread...'. If you are not, you just start to know us, a race of witches...
The tragicomic aspect of the story was that Marino didn't give any explanations about the family vault construction to his wife. She, Lola, full of dreams about the winned lottery price and keen of traveling ('highly imaginative', as she described herself), begun to plan trips here and there and thousand pleasant ways of enjoying the money earned (finally!) by her husband through this stupid lottery hobby. Suddenly, Marino told the entire family that they had a new family vault, that all remains would be transfered from the old one... and that to have it done, he had to spend all the money winned on the lottery.
Molola got almost a stroke. "This man is completely nuts! Once he get something from this wretched lottery, and he spend it in the benefit of the dead instead of enjoying it with the living ones....!". You had to know this extraordinary couple and their love relation for more than 60 years to understand how funny were the scenes we passed through. I was 8 years old by then and I still remember different episodes of "the Tragicomedy of the Rancel Family Vault"... Luckily enough and to calm Molola down, one of their children offered them as a present a trip to Barcelona on a cruise and a nice stay at their daughter's in Catalonia. Her tantrum went away after this.
What poor Molola couldn't imagine was that she was to be the first one to inaugurate, eight years later, the series of burials in the despised new family vault... Followed, ten months later, by her loving husband, who literally let himself die after the day when he lost his beloved Lola.
And so it was how Papamarino gathered the RANCEL beyond physical death... and how -I am sure of it- the RANCEL who preceded him helped him, through the lottery, to make this possible.
- ABOUT · HOW · we · KNEW · that · GRANDFATHER · MARINO · was · never · NAMED · 'MARINO'...
 Grandfather "Marino" was called, of course, "Marino". His wife, who met him in 1900, knew him as Marino. He married under this first name. Their second son was called Marino, like his Daddy. Several of his nephews and nieces were baptized as 'Marino' and 'Marina' in his honour. One of his grandchildren bears 'Marino' as second name (Sergio Marino RANCEL VILLAMANDOS)... We grandchildren called him 'Papamarino', his daughters-in-law and his son-in-law, 'Don Marino'. Quite usual. But it was only when he died, 85 years old, and they were trying to organize his burial in the family vault, when we all knew that Marino... never was Marino. So did it happen. |
The entire family was under the shock of Grandfather's death. The house was full of relatives and friends. Aunt Zenobia came from Barcelona and she took cousin "Lalita" (Candelaria) with her. The undertaker clerk were in charge, as usual, of arranging documents concerning the official aspects like act of death, permit for opening the family vault and burial authorisation.
One of these clerks came and asked my uncle Victoriano (Manano) aside -he was the eldest of my father's brothers, and, pretty nervous and depressed, he was acting as 'head of the family'. Uncle Manano, who like many Rancel became rather deaf when he was excited, suddenly shouted: "How is it possible? Of course it must be there! What a nonsense! Look for it and it will appear...!". Evidently, conversations stopped and everybody stayed silent to get out what was going on. And this was that the undertaker clerk said there was no act in the State Register concerning any 'Marino RANCEL ALVAREZ' which fit to the information given by the family, but there was a certain 'Fernando José RANCEL ALVAREZ' who could be the same person. Uncle Manano had the professional deformation of having been for many years the all-powerful manager of the firm where he worked, united to the military-like manners which sometimes can arise among the Rancel. He didn't stop his grumbling "nonsenses!" and stated that they just had to look properly for it and then they would find the birth act of Marino RANCEL. Somebody remembered then that Grandpa could have actually been 'Fernando Marino' (Fernando was the first name of his father, the great-grandfather, and of several family members). But never Fernando José, of course. We knew the family tree, and all that.
I was then 17 years old and I was seated near grandaunt Trina, Trinidad RANCEL ÁLVAREZ, who from this day on was the only survivor of the nine RANCEL ÁLVAREZ brothers and sisters. She was a real character who could pierce anyone -or freeze anyone, at will- with just a glimpse of her blue eyes. Grandaunt Trina was said, at the time, to be sometimes 'miles away'. Time was supposingly taking a heavy toll on her.
She was following the discussion on her brother's name with a distracted air and she looked absolutely uninterested about it. Everybody gave his opinion, asked, claimed and requested... and suddenly I heard grandaunt Trina saying, so softly that I think I was the only one who heard her: "... this is because Marinito (little Marino) wasn't called Marino...". As I had heard at the time that she sometimes could be rather confused, I thought it was an old-age problem. But she repeated, speaking to nobody in particular: "... Marinito wasn't called Marino, he was called like Daddy...". I just decided to tell it to the 'elders' and I said that grandaunt Trina was saying that Grandpa wasn't called Marino. General stir, and uncle Manano and aunt Alba, pretty excited, who asked impatiently: "...but, come on, aunt Trina, what are you telling now? How is it possible that Dad wasn't called Marino? Are you feeling allright?...".
And then grandaunt Trina, crystal-clear and like she was not living in 1969 but during the late 19th century -which probably was the case-, told us the whole story. A story whose whereabouts she didn't know personally, because she was speaking about events which took place between 1890 and 1900, and she was born only in 1901.
Great-grandfather Fernando was a seaman and a lighthousekeeper. About 1890 he was head-lighthousekeeper at Maspalomas lighthouse, in the most Southern point of island Gran Canaria. There he lived with his family and with three other different families from the lighthouse staff, in a huge building annex to the lighttower. The nearest town was several miles away and the only 'neighbours' were some fishermen who were always in the area. Great-grandfather Fernando organized a sort of school for his children and for the other lighthouse children, where he was the teacher. But the children had a lot of free time and his second son Fernando José (Ferdinand Joseph), born in 1884, adored the sea. Near Maspalomas lighthouse there was a salt water lagoon, filled by the tides, which continues to exist nowadays, although in a minimal version compared to what it was at that time. Surrounded by palmtrees and by the famous Maspalomas sand dunes, with plenty of fish and visited by seagulls, it had to be a little version of Paradise. Great-grandfather Fernando offered his son Fernando José a small boat. The kid spent a lot of time sailing with his boat in Maspalomas lagoon. Fishermen begun to nickname him "el marinito" (the little seaman; marino means 'seaman' in Spanish, and it is also a first name, 'Marino' for men and 'Marina' for women). His brothers and sisters and even his parents found it funny and begun also to call him 'marinito', 'marino'... The boy grew up and he became 'Marino RANCEL' . He moved to Tenerife where he studied bookkeeping, there he met the girl who became his fiancée and later his wife, and even in the official documents he appeared as 'Marino'; later I have found that he was 'Fernando Marino' in very rare ones. He had probably forgotten that he never was baptized or registered as Marino.
So was it. To arrange Papamarino's funeral and burial, they had to make a special register inscription stating that the person registered as 'Fernando José RANCEL ÁLVAREZ' was always known as 'Marino'.
Amen.
