IN THE ANCIENT KINGDOM of LEON (SPAIN),
IN THE REGION WHERE LIVED THE PEOPLE
CALLED BY THE ROMANS "THE ASTURES"...
VILLAMANDOS, also
called "VILLAMANDOS DE LA VEGA", is a municipality of Castile-Leon (Spain).
The municipality is formed by two villages, Villamandos and Villarrabines.
It is in the southeast of Leon province, between Benavente (in Zamora)
and Valencia de Don Juan (Leon). Villamandos' population in 2019 is 308. Villamandos is in Leon's natural region of Vega, near Esla river, whose name comes from "ASTURA" (Astura = Astula = Stula = Estula = Esla). The origin of the town's name is not sure. It appears for the first time in documentos from year 1099 AD, as "Villa Amandos". The surname VILLAMANDOS comes from the town, which was a much larger
one until mid-20th century. But the family name appears frequently in the
nearby town of Villaquejida. Somebody who came from Villamandos, or had
strong links with tghe town, was the first one to be called "the one of Villamandos",
thus creating the family name. |

The VILLAMANDOS, and the families with whom they married (MORÁN, ZOZAS, ZOTES, CHARRO, HERRERO, CADENAS, SALUDES, de la HUERGA, NAVARRO, MAÑANES...) lived for centuries in a small area in the southeast of the province of Leon and the northwest of the province of Zamora -in the ancient Kingdom of Leon-, in the villages of Villamandos, Villaquejida, Cimanes de la Vega, San Cristóbal de Entreviñas, Matilla de Arzón, etc...
All the VILLAMANDOS of the Canary Islands, as well as those in Alicante and Catalonia, descend from Pedro VILLAMANDOS PINTO, Officer of Infantry who was posted in 1904 in the islands, where he married twice and where he died in 1925. His brohter Domingo was the origin of the Villamandos in Andalusia (Southern Spain).
